Welcome to the Cookery Blog

Cookery enrichment takes place every afternoon throughout the week. It’s all so very exciting! Every child will have every opportunity at least twice throughout the school year to plan, prepare and cook a meal that can be taken home to enjoy with their family. They spend a whole afternoon in our fabulous, specially designed technology room. It is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need to help you create mouth watering dishes. Although we have a lot of fun, we are learning at the same time.

Our children learn how to prepare meals from scratch, they are taught how to use knives, the hob and over correctly and safely. They are taught about food hygiene, as well as personal hygiene, and why it is so important especially when preparing meals.

We also regularly invite parents into school to work with their children, showing them how they can prepare healthy, nutritious meals. The parents also have opportunities to come and celebrate their child’s learning and experience first hand the wonders their child has produced.

Did you know that there are only 4-6 children in our Cookery enrichment classes each afternoon? The smaller group sizes ensures they understand the skills and techniques needed in cookery and to build independence and resilience. Each child has their own ingredients that are provided by the school that they have to prepare. That includes: washing the ingredients, chopping as well as cooking. The children must weigh and measure their ingredients so they can complete the whole cycle independently, that also includes cleaning up after themselves and washing the pots! Working as a team to organise themselves throughout the session, developing determination and their love of learning. We bring in so many cross-curricular links to enhance their experiences and allow for real life learning.

Have you heard we also have an after school cookery club? This is very popular! So far we have made: biryani, lasagna, noodles in black bean sauce, and meatballs. These are just some of the wonderful dishes we have created. The best bit is… it feeds a family of four!

In our cookery class we are a team, we think about our Clarendon values and apply them.
